## Choose a journey patients can complete

A patient app is useful when people can complete an important task with less confusion. Start with a specific journey: booking an appointment, preparing for a consultation, accessing a document or asking a follow-up question. Keep a supported alternative for people who cannot or prefer not to use the digital route.

Interview patients and the staff handling the same journey. Observe where information is missing, where people repeat themselves and where a request disappears between systems. Prioritize these failures before adding more features.

## Make status and next steps explicit

| Journey | Information the interface needs | Recovery path |
| -------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| Booking | Appointment type, location, availability and confirmation state | Explain conflicts and preserve entered details |
| Preparation | Required documents, practical instructions and deadlines | Provide a contact route for unclear requirements |
| Results or documents | Publication status, source and relevant context | Explain access problems without exposing another person's data |
| Messaging | Intended use, response expectations and recipient | Route urgent concerns according to the provider's approved process |

Do not display a successful booking merely because a request was submitted. Confirm the receiving system's state and handle retries without creating duplicates. Separate a saved draft, a sent request and an accepted appointment.

## Design for access and comprehension

Use readable text, descriptive labels, visible keyboard focus and clear errors. Test the journey on a small screen and with assistive technology. Keep translations consistent through the confirmation and error states, not just the landing page.

The [WCAG 2.2 standard](https://www.w3.org/TR/WCAG22/) provides accessibility criteria. Automated checks help find some issues; they do not replace task testing with people. Avoid collecting unnecessary personal details and explain why each required field is needed.

## Build the integration behind the screen

Define stable identifiers for patients, appointments and messages. Agree on the source of truth, authorization rules and failure handling. Test time zones, rescheduling, cancellation, duplicate submissions and an unavailable receiving system.

## Measure service quality, not just downloads

Establish the baseline for task completion, abandonment, support requests, correction effort and time to confirmation. Distinguish a technical error from a patient choosing another route. Compare similar appointment types and populations before attributing a change to the app.

Do not promise a fixed reduction in missed appointments, workload or follow-up visits. Measure those outcomes locally and document changes in staffing, reminder policy or appointment availability that could also explain the result.

## Release in complete increments

Ship one end-to-end journey with clear ownership, monitoring and a recovery procedure. Include the staff-facing work created by the feature. Review support cases and usability feedback before expanding to another journey.

For an existing product, a focused review can identify where the interface and backend disagree about task state. [Discuss a project](https://alabenaicha.me/contact?intent=project) with the journey, systems and constraints you want to improve.
